Story
Story

Kuranoya opened its doors in January 2010 when, tired of our hectic life in Tokyo, we decided to move to Tono to run our own comfortable yet elegant Japanese-style inn.

Tono is a lovely village, surrounded by mountains and crossed by clean rivers, a town that maintains the flavour of old times. Yet locals, too used to such a beauty, tend to take it for granted and are unable to promote the city to outsiders. For this reason, when we decided to make of Tono our new home, we decided that we would become Tono’s ambassadors to outsiders by running our own B&B.

In Tokyo we worked for a US Financial firm and the Japanese edition of English language magazines, therefore we can both communicate with our guests in English. In our inn we have created an environment where foreign visitors will feel at ease, while enjoying a truly Japanese hospitality.

Environment

Tono is a lively town of about twentyeight thousand inhabitants, considered to be the cradle of Japanese folklore. Local folktales, related to the daily life of peasants, have been passed by word of mouth for centuries, from generation to generation, until they were collected in a book titled  “Tono monogatari” (“Legends of Tono”), written by the renown author Yanagita Kunio in 1910.

Even today, Tono’s citizens value their own unique culture, and the legends contained in the book are still part of their daily life. Elementary school children, every autumn, perform the Legends of Tono in their annual Culture Festival and each winter, local non professional actors represent stories narrated in the Legends of Tono, in a theatrical performance called “Tono Monogatari Fantasy”.

Tono, for its culture, traditions, gastronomy and untouched, ever changing landscape, is a destination off the track definitely worth a visit, especially if you are a connoisseur and lover of the Japan's true spirit.
